Microeconomics

At the full professor level, the area of microeconomics is represented by Maarten Janssen, Wieland Müller, Karl Schlag, Philipp Schmidt-Dengler, Jean-Robert Tyran and Christine Zulehner. For other researchers in the area, please consult http://econ.univie.ac.at/research/fields-of-research/. People in microeconomics, employ a wide variety of techniques, ranging from experimental methods to econometric estimation of structural micro-economic models to theoretical modeling of the strategic interaction between individual agents. There are several strong thematic points of interaction:

Industrial Organization
D. Garcia, M. Janssen, W. Müller, P. Schmidt-Dengler, J.-R. Tyran & C. Zulehner

The area of industrial organization studies how firms strategically operate in markets and how competition authorities can use their policy instruments to improve the efficient functioning of these markets. Faculty members publish regularly in top journals and act as advisers to firms or competition authorities on important cases (ranging from telecom auctions to cartel cases). Recent publications in this area you can find below.

Behavioral Economics
W. Müller, K. Schlag & J.-R. Tyran

Behavioral economics studies whether and, if so, how economic agents depart from the traditional rational approach to individual decision-making, and what the potential consequences are for aggregate economic outcomes. The Vienna Center for Experimental Economics (VCEE) runs a laboratory where students can also run experiments. Recent publications in this area you can find below.

Consumer Search
D. Garcia, M. Janssen, P. Schmidt-Dengler & K. Schlag

Departing from the standard assumption in much of traditional microeconomics that consumers are perfectly informed about the characteristics and prices of the products available in a particular market, research on consumer search takes as a starting point that consumers have to invest resources to acquire this information. This results in market power and price dispersion. Recent publications in this area you can find below.
