In terms of best research performance over the last five years Jean-Robert Tyran is listed at rank 50 and Maarten Janssen at 77.

The Handelsblatt-Ranking Volkswirtschaftslehre 2017 ranks the University of Vienna as number 14 in terms of total research performance of the economics faculty. This number is not corrected for the size of the faculty. If corrected for the number of professors and only top-5 and top field publications are counted, the University of Vienna would be ranked 6th.

The Handelsblatt-Ranking is one of the most extensive rankings in the German-speaking world. It has undergone a significant change as compared to earlier years as its methodology has changed and it now also includes more researchers that are active outside the German speaking world.
